The traditional treatment for hearing voices in western medicine has been prescription drugs.
You should never change or stop medication without consulting your doctor.
However, psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists are increasingly using talking therapies to explore the meaning of the voices. This works by understanding the messages for the individual in what the voices are saying and cultivating more helpful responses to them. Eleanor Longden – see video below – explains this very clearly. Another related approach – Compassion Focused Therapy – is to encourage the compassionate side of ourselves alongside the sad or angry parts.
